什么是广域网？(a wide area network?)
广域网，通常被称为WAN，是一种通信网络，它利用现有技术将本地计算机网络连接到一个更大的工作网络中，该网络可以覆盖国家和国际两个地点。这与局域网和城域网形成对比，城域网在有限的地理区域内提供通信。
将一个计算机网络与另一个计算机网络连接起来通常是可取的，尤其是对于运营多个设施的企业而言。从局域网开始，到广域网，使用现有的电话技术最容易实现这一点。本质上，光纤用于在位于不同设施中的网络之间建立链路。通常，这意味着使用标准电话线，称为POTS，或采用PSTN（公共交换电话网络）技术。在20世纪90年代，第三种选择，即创建网络的ISDN（综合业务数字网络）解决方案获得了极大的普及，主要是因为这一概念使得将网络扩展到国界之外更具成本效益。
广域网覆盖范围广，公司可以利用公共资源进行运营。例如，许多零售药店使用一个药店作为支持客户使用其中一个药店配药的一部分。一旦进入药店的公共客户数据库，客户就可以在公司的任何地点免费配药，即使是在另一个州度假。
公司也充分利用广域网。内部功能，如销售、生产和开发、营销和会计，也可以通过这种广域网应用程序与授权地点共享。将此作为一种利用基于位置的个人计算机网络并为整个公司创建统一计算机网络的手段，意味着员工可以在任何地方工作。如果一个设施因自然灾害而损坏或无法访问，员工只需移动到另一个可以访问统一网络的位置，然后继续工作。
广域网使公司能够以前所未有的方式进行内部沟通。作为奖励，消费者可以享受到许多过去供应商无法提供的好处。从这个意义上说，它让每个人都离得更近了一点。
