生产要素是经济学家经常使用的一个术语。它指的是可用于对需要提供商品和服务的项目进行分类的类别。土地、劳动力和资本货物这三大类包括各种各样的自然和人造物品。

在考虑创建过程中需要什么时，很容易理解制作一个项目需要其他项目。生产要素分为三大类，包括投入创作过程的一切，无论结果是有形的还是无形的。有形创作通常被称为商品，无形创作通常是服务。

这三个生产要素中的每一个都发挥着一种作用，这是使用其他类别的物品无法实现的。这意味着，如果所有生产要素都不可用，则无法完成创建周期。通常公认的第一类是土地，它可以被视为提供者和住宿者。

这一类别中的项目不仅仅指地球的固体表面。在这一类别中还包括环境的其他组成部分，如水、阳光和矿物质。没有土地，就不会有可以生产成品的原材料。人工创造也不能被容纳，因为没有地方生产任何东西或提供服务。

从这个意义上讲，土地的一个独特特征是，它是包括可再生和不可再生资源的唯一类别。例如，树木和阳光是自然会被取代的资源。煤炭和小块土地是无法替代的资源。

劳动是指人们用来制造东西的努力。如果人们不参与创造过程，原始产品就不会成为每天用来满足我们需求和欲望的复杂商品或服务。生产需要许多不同类型的劳动力，其中一些不是体力劳动。有些人的贡献主要是精神上的。这可以在比较建筑工人和分析师时看到。

最后的生产要素是资本，资本是有助于创造过程持续增长的创造物。例如，许多服务的提供都基于技术。在分析周期时，可以看出，人类使用原材料生产技术，然后用于其他有助于经济发展的目的。同样的周期也适用于货物。人们从环境中去除金属和橡胶来制造机器，而机器又被用来制造零售产品。。
