什么是审查员？(a censor?)
审查员是指有权通过删除或压制被认为是令人反感的内容来控制信息的人。被审查的材料可能在道德上有问题，在政治上不正确，对国家安全有危险，或因其他原因而令人反感，这些原因可能是公开的和公开的，也可能是私人的和未公开的。
“检查员”一词起源于古罗马，在古罗马，两名地方法官负责公民及其财产的登记，并承担相关任务，如征税，后来他们的职权范围又增加了对公共道德的监督。检查员办公室最早创建于公元前443年，并于公元前22年由皇帝接管其权力。

其他一些借鉴中国制度的东亚国家也扮演了类似的角色。韩国政府和日本政府都有审查制度。其他社会也有审查员。
在宗教方面，审查员在罗马天主教会中的作用是众所周知的。与圣经有关或与宗教、神学或其他密切相关主题有某种关系的作品由审查员审查，审查员有权发表nihil obstat——这是一种“不妨碍”作品出版的判断。这项工作随后由主教批准
在美国，《第一修正案》、《学术自由原则》和《信息自由法》倾向于保护许多活动免受审查。然而，某些机构和个人有权在特定和有限的情况下进行审查。
这里有几个例子。军方可以审查机密军事信息的传播；联邦通信委员会可以审查被判定为淫秽的广播和电视节目；学校可以控制学生在其资助和赞助下出版的报纸上的某些类型的内容；不负责任地使用言论诽谤、诽谤或诽谤他人的人可能会被起诉，这实际上是审查某些类型的言论。
