什么是禁令？(an injunction?)
禁令是禁止个人或群体做出特定行为的法院命令。例如，最常见的类型是禁止令，禁止对他人造成身体或精神威胁的人与该人接触。此外，该命令可能包括威胁者与被威胁者的距离的实际测量。违反此类禁令可能意味着立即逮捕。
通常，限制令一开始是暂时的，许多限制令持续时间不超过一周。要继续执行该命令，请求该命令的人必须向法院证明该命令应具有更持久的效力。如果请求人不能证明其继续存在的必要性，禁令将仅在法官指定的短时间内有效。针对虐待配偶签发的限制令通常就是这种情况，因为被虐待者往往会重新考虑起诉其配偶，并因为担心即使是限制令也无法使其免受伤害而放弃指控。
的确，限制令实际上并不能阻止一个人不服从法官的命令，但如果违反禁令，它确实会使刑事案件更容易审理。不幸的是，在家庭虐待的情况下，施虐者可能在违反命令的同时严重伤害或杀害其伴侣。除非提供警察保护，否则禁止令不是防止施虐者伤害的保障。
另一种禁令是媒体禁言令。在这些案件中，法官可以禁止媒体报道引人注目的审判，直到审判结束。为了保护原告，如前黑手党成员，并在作证和审判期间保护他们的下落，还经常发布禁言令。通常，儿童或强奸受害者不要求媒体保持沉默，因为保密法保护他们。
禁言令也可以帮助陪审团在不影响媒体来源的情况下做出决定。法院还可能发布命令，将陪审团扣押，或禁止他们阅读可能影响其裁决的某些材料或观看某些节目。在非常引人注目的案件中，隔离陪审团可能是确保公正裁决的唯一途径。
禁止从事特定活动的人可对本法院命令提出上诉。有些人会在没有理由的情况下向法官申请禁令，这可能导致上诉。此外，可能会对最初请求命令的人发布反禁令，以防止进一步骚扰。
