什么是答辩人？(a respondent?)
答辩人是在法庭上回答案件的人。这一术语通常在民事意义上使用，在刑事案件中处于类似地位的人被称为被告。根据大多数国家的法律，被告人享有许多法律权利，包括审查针对他们的证据的权利、盘问证人的权利以及在案件审理过程中提出动议和其他法律文件以保护其利益的权利。
在民事诉讼中，提起诉讼的人被称为申请人；她或他正在向法院提出请求，以协助法院寻求某种形式的补救，如赔偿金的裁决。被告是被起诉的人。根据法律规定，必须向被告送达文件，证明已提起诉讼的事实，并提供关于何时何地审理诉讼的信息。
在对民事诉讼结果提出上诉的情况下，诉讼的任何一方都可以成为被告。例如，如果原诉讼的裁决有利于申请人，且被申请人提出上诉，则申请人成为被上诉人或被上诉人，而原被上诉人是上诉人。与原案一样，双方都享有某些法律权利和保护，旨在确保案件得到公正审理和裁决，双方都有机会陈述自己的案件。
答辩人可以以无效为理由，采取行动试图完全驳回该案件。如果做不到这一点，可以提出其他类型的动议，抗议纳入某些类型的证据，质疑对方的主张，等等。
被诉人可以选择不对索赔提出异议，在这种情况下，法院将立即作出判决，其中包括赔偿金裁决。然而，他们确实有法律权利选择对针对他们的案件作出回应，法院必须通过安排审判时间来适应这一点。在一些国家，大量的民事案件促使人们提出了一些方法，以抑制提起诉讼，鼓励人们寻求其他补救手段，从而在法庭上腾出空间。
