根据吉尼斯世界纪录，世界上最大的建筑是波音公司位于美国华盛顿州埃弗雷特的埃弗雷特工厂。著名的客机747、767和777都在那里组装。埃弗雷特工厂建于1968年，拥有564万立方米（2亿立方英尺）的可用占地面积。自那以后，它已经扩大了两次，1980年767装配线扩大了45%，1993年777装配线扩大了50%。该场地的总占地面积为1025英亩（415公顷），建筑面积为282英亩（113公顷），铺砌场地和停车场占地215英亩（86公顷）。这使得世界上最大的建筑面积相当于一平方公里多一点。。
世界上许多最大的建筑都与飞机或航天器的组装有关。例如，德国勃兰登堡的Aerium大约是埃弗雷特工厂的一半大小，最初是作为一艘从未建造过的巨型飞艇的装配区建造的。位于佛罗里达州的NASA车辆装配大楼大约是埃弗雷特工厂的三分之一，该工厂是为组装航天飞机而建造的。
有几栋建筑比埃弗雷特工厂大一点，但通常不被认可，因为并非所有的建筑面积都是可用的。例如，荷兰阿尔斯米尔的阿尔斯米尔花卉拍卖会规模稍大，但并非所有的建筑面积都可用，排名低于埃弗雷特工厂。它仍然有资格成为世界上最大的商业（而非工业）建筑，并有望成为世界上最大的花卉拍卖建筑。
中国的长城和中国的三峡大坝是另外两座挑战埃弗雷特核电站世界最大建筑地位的建筑。中国的长城有6500多公里长，但不符合建筑标准，因为它没有内部空间，实际可用空间也很少。类似地，三峡大坝本身也不具备建筑的资格，因为其内部的绝大多数都无法以通常所说的“建筑”的方式使用
