非实时计算机进程没有截止日期。另一方面，实时系统不仅要快速响应，而且要在可预测的时间内做出响应。一个很好的例子是汽车的防抱死制动系统。防抱死制动系统有望在可预见的短时间内释放车辆制动器，防止危险的车轮抱死。

不幸的是，有时实时系统无法按预期响应。如果在截止日期前未完成任务，则此过程将失败。在计算中，由于对系统的其他要求，没有给出宽限期。必须遵守截止日期，不考虑其他因素；它们被认为是任务关键型的。

当一个进程被认为是硬实时的时，它必须在特定的时间内完成其操作。如果它不能在截止日期前完成，那么它的运行就没有价值，并且它所属的系统可能面临故障。然而，当一个系统被认为是软实时的时候，就有延迟的空间。例如，在这样的系统中，延迟的进程可能不会导致整个系统失败。相反，它可能导致工艺或系统的正常质量下降。

嵌入式系统中经常使用硬实时系统。例如，考虑一个汽车发动机控制系统。这样的系统被认为是困难的，因为后期处理可能导致发动机故障。当任务或事件必须在严格的截止日期前处理时，使用这些系统。当系统故障可能导致损坏或生命损失时，这通常是必要的。

软实时系统通常在存在多个连接的系统时使用，这些系统必须在不断变化的事件和环境下进行维护。当存在并发访问需求时，也会使用这些系统。例如，用于维护主要运输公司的旅行计划的软件通常是软实时的。这类软件有必要及时更新进度表。然而，几秒钟的延迟不太可能造成混乱。
